5 year gap

Five years is a long time with no updates, I was going to redo the New York post and then my Mother in Law became sick and my mind became focused on that. Not sure what prompted me to think about this blog but here it is. No plans to delete it nor continue it in great detail. A lot has happened in the last five years.

I need to figure out a use for that that I'm not already using Facebook for.  Updates for friends and family is the main thing which FB does remarkably well.

New York New York

Just the small matter of spending the weekend in New York!

Vicky and I drove up and stayed in a hotel in New Jersey.

www.themadisonhotel.com

The hotel is about an hours train ride away from the centre of New York.

First off, we visited Bevedere Castle, which is right in the centre of Central Park

Afterwards, we walked, AND walked, we could NOT get a taxi, no amount of flagging any down helped :(

On one of the streets, we noticed this sign!  It must be a regular occurrence around here.

I took my Wife to Tiffany's but she came away with no new jewellery, and we saw the real Tiffany Diamond.

For dinner, we stopped in an Irish pub called the Pig 'N' Whistle, and I find out later that my cousin Andrea has also had drinks here as well.

For our evenings entertainment we took in what was to be the first of two Broadway shows.  Friday night we saw Paul Rudd and Michael Shannon in GRACE.  A dark comedy.  It was excellent, and better still, we saw Paul Rudd exit the stage door, and Vicky was able to get his autograph!

Saturday we started early and our first trip was to the Empire State Building.

We scored with the weather, it was a beautiful clear day.

Saturday afternoon, we saw our second Broadway show, and it was only The Phantom of the Opera!
The production was amazing, and I loved it.

You can not go to New York without eating NY Pizzz, so Vicky and I took the subway to Little Italy and we stumbled upon the annual  San Gennaro festival.  The streets were packed with food stalls. And it was a lot of fun seeing what was going on.

Around a corner we found a restaurant called Sals.

And here it is!

Having been in New York last year, I knew how busy it can be, but this trip felt like Eldon Square on Christmas Eve!  The one taxi we managed to get into, that was hairy, I can not understand why I saw no cars collide, or hit anyone!  There is so much more to do, and I can't wait until I go back again.

I will post more pictures in the next update.

Camping in West Virginia

Camping in West Virginia

To celebrate my Sister in Laws Birthday, we went camping in West Virginia.
The family spent a whole week at the campsite, but due to work commitments, Vicky and I could only stay for two days.

Apart from the insects, the mud and rain, and the disgusting shower facilities, we all had a great time!

London 2012

I was very happy to see that we had the honour of hosting the Olympics this year.  But unfortunately I wasn't able to see as much of it as I would have liked.  TV channel NBC have the rights over here, and they showed 5 hours worth of highlights every night.  Unfortunately that was about it!  If you wanted to watch it live you had to watch it on their website during the day, when most of us were at work.  During the weekends I watched the majority of the live events online on the bbc's website.

NBC did not show the whole of the of opening or closing ceremonys.  Part way through the opening they cut away to an interview with Micheal Phelps!  Most of their coverage was good, but if an American was not involved in a final, they were not interested.  During one of the mens gymnastics finals, TeamGB won the silver, but the Japanese who won Bronze appealed, and the judges swapped our medals during the event.  I only found this out the next day, I watched this event on NBC, but the commentators did not explain very well what was going on.  Insane.

As a once in a lifetime event, I bought a few things from the official 'London2012' website, here's a couple of things I bought:

Not pictured is a lanyard I now wear at work with the Union flag all over it and 'London2012'.  I love this as I think it has stopped people asking if I am from Australia.

A week tomorrow my Wife and I are going back to New York for the weekend!
Expect a blog about this soon.

A couple of random things I have found in local supermarkets, which I left on the shelf!

Family, Philadelphia and Tennessee

June was a big month here in America.  My Dad visited, and I added Pennsylvania to my list of States visited.

I haven't seen my Dad since I emigrated last year so it was a thrill when I heard he had booked a flight.

I work opposite the airport so I was able to leave early and pick him up.

After a few days of him settling in we spend the weekend together and on the Saturday we visited Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington.  The area was huge and reminded me of Beamish.

The next day we visited Arlington Cemetery.  I do not think people realise how big this place is.  Dad enquired about a specific grave for Audie L Murphy, and with Vickys help, we found it!

Audie L Murphy is widely regarded as the most decorated American soldier of the second world war.

Philadelphia

Visiting Philadelphia was exciting as we had tickets to see rock band Tenacious D, and I would meet up with a long time online friend from an old Horror Movie message board.

We saw the Liberty Bell, Independance Hall and, MOST famous of all, the Rocky steps ...

However, the weekend in Philadelphia did not start out quite so well.

Friday night brought warnings of a severe thunderstorm in the area.  We heard warnings on the local news, and by the emergency system on the television too.  Whenever bad weather is in the area, the local authority have the means to add a scrolling message to all televisions, but this also comes with a very loud buzzing noise.  Great if you want to record something.  This Friday night we also had my Sister-in-Laws kids over for the night, we were all lounging on the sofa watching Tintin, when the rain started, and the temperature jumped to 100'.  Checking the weather channel, we were informed of a dangerous storm approaching.  This was confirmed when the power went out for a few seconds.

Sadly, the storm also brought damage to our garden, one of our tree's was struck by lightning and it could have caused damage to a neighbours car if she had been home that night.  Phew!

This does not look too bad, but the tree is in danger of falling on our house!

With the branch blocking the path, we had to drive around the school out back just to get onto the main road.  Liz's current boyfriend has a chainsaw, so he helped cut it down whilst we were away.

This was the view from our room!

This is Independance Hall and the Liberty Bell.  The queues were huge to go inside, but we sneaked a photograph from a side window!

Visiting the area where the film Rocky was filmed was a lot of fun.  Here's me running up the steps, and a picture of me next to the statue.  There were maybe 10 - 15 people queuing up for a photo, and Vicky went onto youtube on her phone for the VERY appropriate music!

Here's me at the concert later that night:

Being at a concert in the open was fun, and even better that I was able to see someone who I'd only seen in the movies.

Elreth's Alley:

Elfreth's Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited street in the country, was created in 1703 when two property owners on Front Street made a cartway to the rear of their lots to subdivide their land. By the end of the 18th Century, Elfreth's Alley had assumed its present character as a street of modest row homes. The oldest homes are simple two-and-a-half-story structures with parlors entered directly from the street. Some have pent eaves. Exterior woodwork is simple, as are doorways and transom lights. Most of the houses were built for rent and lived in by craftsmen. The Museum House at 126 is typical of these early homes. It was occupied by a dressmaker who had her shop on the first floor and living quarters above. The three-and-a-half-story houses were built after the Revolutionary War and show the influence of the Federal style in the classically framed doorways with pilasters and pediments.

Notice the difference in the Union Flag!  I want one of these!

A week later Tennessee.  We stayed in a town called Pigeon Forge, and in an area called The Strip.  Think a redneck version of Las Vegas, and you get the idea!

We stayed in Tennessee to see a very good friend of ours from Cumberland Gap, she is responsible for Vicky and I being together!  One of the highlights was the Titanic Museum.  We had our reservations about this attraction, considering the rest of the area!, but we were VERY happy that it was just awesome.  The museum may look tacky from the outside, but inside was a different story.  They had a few original artifacts from the wreck, and a lot of original photo's that Vicky had never seen.  But it became even better inside the gift shop later.  Vicky bought a few things, and then I sent her to the car, and did my own shopping.  I've probably got enough to last the next few Birthdays and Christmas'.

We also went on a little adventure and found the birthplace of Davy Crockett.  The 'Tavern 'was closed, but didn't stop us from enjoying this.

In other news, I have now found and enjoyed!, 5 different Newcastle Brown Ales, all found here in Northern Virginia.

And the tree was finally cut down as you can see here:

This will help supply us with a lot of firewood for the Winter.

Space Shuttles and Rocky

The past couple of months have been busy.  Busy with work and fun!

The middle of April saw the retirement of NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery.  It's new home is now the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum located right next to where I work.

Vicky, Mom and I visited the museum during it's first public showing.  Naturally the museum was packed and we had a LOT of fun.  The Museum is a very large hanger, and inside they must have 100+ airplanes, including a concorde!, and the Enola Gay.

A few days before the official unveiling, the Space Shuttle did a fly-over the city, and from my office building, I was able to take this photo:

I can vagely remember watching John Cravens Newsround in 1986 watching the Challenger shuttle explode.  And to see one of NASA's shuttle up close was a huge thrill for me:

Recently I visited the shop 'The British Pantry' and bought some proper bacon and black pudding:

Very expensive at $11 for 8-10 rashers of bacon, and $6 for tiny blood sausage.

At the end of April, I heard that a good friend of the family was going to be in Washington for a weekend stay during his holiday in America.  Friend Terry from the pub quiz I used to attend was staying in Washington for a couple of days before traveling to Chicago.  We were able to spend a couple of hours together catching up on our lives.  It was so good to see someone from home.

I've spent time with my cousin Andrea here, Terry, and oh, just the small matter of my DAD! visiting in a couple of weeks.  There will be a blog update all about that soon.

May the 26th marked my one year anniversary of emigrating.  We didn't have a big celebration about this, I just wanted to spend the time alone with my Wife.  The timing was perfect.  My Mother in Law took her Grandson, the eldest lad Ethan to New York for the weekend, meaning Vicky and I had the house to ourselves for a couple of days, I think there may have been champagne in the fridge too ...

June is going to be a busy month for Vicky and I.  As well as Dad visiting, Vicky and I are traveling north to Philadelphia to see Tenacious D in concert!  This is the actor Jack Blacks own band.  We won't be alone either, I'm meeting up with an online friend from years ago.  The 'Rocky Steps' are nearby, so expect a photo of me there, and I'll try out a Philly Cheesesteak too!

July the 4th Weekend, we're traveling down to stay with a friend in Tennessee, and we're hoping to visit DollyWood.

September seeing my return to New York!

Vicky recently won a free night in a hotel, and all she did was 'like' a news report about a hotel on the website Facebook.com

For those not familiar with Facebook.com, it's a website where you link with friends & business's, and whenever someone writes about anything, or shares a photograph, it appears on a 'newsfeed', where you can see what they shared with you, and you can also add a comment to their article.  See the photo above about Vicky winning the free stay in the hotel!

We have stayed at the hotel before.  It's located in New Jersey, and it's right outside a train station which is about a 40 minute ride to New York.
